NZ State Highway One eBooks

April 3rd, 2011

SH1 Road SignPhoto News Travellers GuideThe main highway that runs the length of New Zealand from Bluff in the South Island to Cape Reinga in the North Island is called SH1 (State Highway One).

It’s road sign is a white number on a red shield as shown to the right. The highway is 941 Km long from Bluff to Picton in the South Island and 1106 km from Wellington to Cape Reinga in the North Island making a total distance of 2047 km.

When you drive along New Zealand’s longest highway you drive past many interesting things not always knowing that they are there. SH1 ebooks are being written to make it easier for you to know what to look for in each town before you get there and also for you to have a record of your journey along New Zealand’s main highway SH1. Each story is told using photographs which is why we have called our ebooks Photo News Travellers Guides.

I started my Photo News journey from Bluff on the 1st November 2009 and have been collecting photographs along SH1 for my ebooks ever since. You can learn about what is coming up on our 6 SH1 directory websites that cover Invercargill, Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch and every rural township in between.

Visit our ebook shop now and browse the titles and don’t forget to add this Travellers Guide website to your favourites to follow what’s new on the Photo News Travellers Guide.

North Island Man first to Promote Caroline Bay

September 18th, 2011

Its hard to beleive that a North Islander would become the first person in the world to photograph South Island’s Caroline Bay and publish a pictorial book about it. I first set foot on Caroine Bay in Timaru in 1963 as a 23 year old South Island tourist. Little did I know then that I would marry a South Island women bring up a family in Timaru and eventually become the first person in the world to write a pictorial book about Caroline Bay with over 400 photos in it. Little did I know then that at 70 years of age my photography work woud be rejected by the Timaru hierachy and I would be forced to knock on doors begging money from people to pay for the printing of the book. Little did I know then that the local newsmedia would refuse to reveiw the book or even interview me about it. Mind you they were the days before emails when you knew that if you wrote someone a letter you would get a reply. They were the days when your photos were printed out and you kept them in a photo album.
Recording History
The Caroline Bay book that I have published will eventually become a valuable historic document provided I can find someone in Timaru who cares enough about the history of their town and are willing to give me a hand.

Christchurch’s Child Earthquake Victims to Receive Comfort from Timaru Books

June 21st, 2011

66 Christchurch childen lost a parent in the recent earthquakes. What do you say to these children and how do you comfort them. It is a well known fact that pet animals have a calming effect on children. Its impractical to transport pets to the children who lost a parent  in Christchurch earthquake but we can send them a book full of photos of real live animals and a story about each pet

Family Pets & Garden Ornaments
I am writing a book about family pets and garden ornaments in Timaru. When the book is finished I want to give free copies of the book to the 66 childrenwho lost a parent  in the Christchurch earthquake. I am looking for family pets for the book so if you have a pet with a wee story to describe its nature then we will put it in the book.

How the Worlds Largest Piano Maker Inspired Me

June 8th, 2011

I had read in the local newspaper that a young man had built the largest piano in the world. I love to meet people who think outside the square so I had a desire to met this young man with the veiw to photographing the biggest piano in te world. He phoned me and I met with him in the shed that houses the biggest piano in the world.

Why did you  it?
This was my first question and he ansered, I did not set out to build the biggest piano in the world. I learnt that every piano has its  own sound and the bigger the piono the better the sound. I asked my music teacher what would the sound be like if we stretched a piece of wire longer than its ever been done befoe. When I did this I got a sound which was different to any other sound I had heard from a piano before. My next challenge was to build a piano case to house my long pieces of wire.

What inspired me?
The fact that a 16 year old boy had used his curiosity to ask the question why and then he set about to find the answer.  I had taken some photos of this geneous young man with  his creation of the worlds largest piano and I told them I was going to publish them in a book. He asked when the book would be published and I could not tell him because I have no funding for the book and no way of promoting it. I have been trying to sell my promotional books on the internet but no one is interested in buying them.

Timaru Time Capsule
I am working in the country at the moment photogaphing every thing that I think will be interested to readers of my books. In a small country town called Cave I found a large rock and on it were these words   NEAR THIS SPOT THE RESIDENTS OF CAVE AND ITS ENVORONS CELEBRATED THE MILLINNIUM 1999  – 2000
A TIME CAPSULE IS BURIED HERE TO BE OPENED IN THE YEAR   2100

That was my Answer.
If I am spending thousands of dollars of my own personal money photographing things that are happening in the community and no one in the community wants to pay any money for the books then why don’t I bury them in a time capsule for people to enjoy in 100 years time.. My books are all in plastic presentation folders so the paper and ink will keep well. People who wanted to be remembered in 100 years time could  make a donation to the cause have their name or photo published in the time capsule.

A Pat on the Back and a Kick in the Guts

June 3rd, 2011

A Pat on the Back

A former Mayor of Timaru Wynne Raymond is the only person in South Canterbury that has ever written to me and given me any praise for the work I have done over the last 35 years in my effort to promote the Timaru district. Below is his letter.

 Dear Ron,

You were kind enough to refer me to your “Caroline Bay Pictorial Book”.  I managed to find it on line and I very much liked what I saw. I am however no great computer operator.  You were kind enough to print it all out and, for a very reasonable fee you put it all together in a proper binder format.  Thank you for that.

Not only are the many photos interesting but the written commentary adds hugely to the publication because all the snippets of information make the photos come alive.

Congratulations on doing your utmost to support and promote the beautiful area in which we live.

 Kind regards and good luck

 Wynne Raymond

 A Kick in the Guts

Some time ago I made an appointment to see the current Mayor of Timaru Janie Annear to discuss ways in which we could promote Timaru better.
It was a kick in the guts for me when she cancelled the appointment without giving a reason.

I received another kick in the guts this week when a staff member of the Timaru District Council wrote a letter to the Mayor and her councillors telling them not to give my company Timaru Tourist Promotions Ltd any money regardless of how worthwhile my ideas might be

I was to launch the sale of my Photo News Travellers Books to the council on Tuesday but I’ve cancelled that appointment in light of the way I am being treated by the current Mayor, Timaru District Councillors and the council staff.

My Timaru promotional and educational books are now being withdrawn from the market until I can find suitable sponsors who value my work.

I ‘m also writing a new book with the title

“A Pat on the Back and a Kick in the Guts”

BIG DEMAND FOR PHOTO NEWS TRAVELLERS GUIDE BOOKS

May 26th, 2011

Word of mouth is working as more people get to know about my series of Photo News Travellers Guide Books
I am pubishing the books to help promote town and country districts,  record todays history and generally educate people about life in New Zealand

My first lot of books have been put online for sale as eletronic ebooks but demand for them has been slow. What is hapening however is that the older generation are now phoning and asking me to print for them hard copies of the books  because that are not fully educated on the use of the internet. Down loading ebooks is not something older people are used to and the younger generation are certainly not interested in reading travellers guide books unless they have sex or violence in them.

 Charity
Because the Photo News books use  photos to tell their story they are very popular with those New Zealanders and foriegners who can’t read english. It seems the only way we can get the books into schools and into the hands of tourists is to give them away. As District councils do not have a budget for paying private enterprise to promote the district, record history or educate the people they serve  we have to rely on the public for donations. For every book we sell we are asking the public to make an extra donation which will be used so we can give some of  the books away for free.

Make a Donation
If you make a 3 figure donation you will get your name in the books as a sponsor. Each book is indvidually published and the pages are presented in an attractive presentation folder.
Make a donation and make a difference in the lives of others call me on Phone 03 686 1271
